The brilliance of Luftwerk illuminates the Cloud Gate at Millennium Park, creating an interactive artistic magic the likes of which the city has never before seen.

On February 10, 2012, Luftwerk (the collaboration of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero) delivered the opening night of their visions of patterned and linier light to Chicago. Luminous Field is an installation of light and sound that captivates the senses and imagination. ART plays with ART, as this magnificent creation dances in the warped reflections of the already dazzling Cloud Gate. The snow and cold did not keep people away from this groundbreaking event; in fact the snow sprinkled an unexpected enchantment on this wonderland suspended just east of Michigan Avenue.

Cloud Gate, (nicknamed “The Bean”) the startlingly beautiful sculpture by artist Anish Kapoor, acts as a worm hole that ironically draws light in with reflection instead of gravity and then twists, pulls and distorts it. By itself, Luminous Fieldwould be a stunning installation in any open area.

Coupled with Cloud Gate, it becomes a continuous generator of countless, colorful, quantum mathematical intersections. When you look, your eyes act as a short fuse to the explosion of stimulation in your brain. While the ever-changing movements of Luminous Fielddance off of the Cloud Gate, something spontaneously spectacular happens. As a byproduct of the precise calculations of these two artistic masterpieces, ART continuously and organically creates new ART.

The musical composition of Owen Clayton Condon provides a lovely soundtrack to Luminous Field and the beautifully choreographed movements of Chicago theatre company Collaboraction perfectly, playfully and whimsically accent this unprecedented artistic event.

DO NOT MISS your chance to experience this groundbreaking and completely enthralling walk-through installation of intersecting brialliance.

“Luminous Field” by Luftwerk – Light and Sound Installation

This February, Millennium Park is transformed into a digital canvas of light and geometrical form with its first-ever site-specific video and sound installation by the Chicago-based artistic ensemble Luftwerk. Created specifically for Millennium Park, the installation will illuminate Cloud Gate – known by many Chicagoans as “The Bean” – and its surrounding AT&T Plaza with dramatic images and colors set to music composed by Owen Clayton Condon, of the local avant-garde classical ensemble, Third Coast Percussion.

Luftwerk is the collaborative vision of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero. By merging video and light with material, surface, and structure, they shape content into an immersive sculptural experience. Their work illuminates the realm of special events, stage, gallery and public venue. Both artists are graduates of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and have worked together for over ten years, forming Luftwerk in 2007.
