“HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH” SING-A-LONG!

ONE NIGHT ONLY! Saturday, March 27, 2010

Nationally known shadowcast troupe Midnight Radio will perform along with the film and lead the sing-a-long in this Glam Rock Odyssey!

Adapted from the critically acclaimed off-Broadway rock musical hit, the film, Hedwig and The Angry Inch, tells the story of an ‘internationally ignored’ rock singer, Hedwig, and her search for stardom and love. Born a boy named Hansel whose life’s dream is to find his other half, Hedwig reluctantly submits to a sex change operation in order to marry an American G.I. and get over the Berlin Wall to freedom. The operation is botched, leaving her with the aforementioned ‘angry inch’. Through a collage of amazing songs, comedic monologues, flashbacks and animation, Hedwig tells her tumultuous life story in a way that reinvented the rock musical.

Chicago-based live fan shadowcast troupe Midnight Radio will perform simultaneously onstage along with the 2001 Sundance Award winning film, Rocky Horror style, leading the audience participation. Featuring flamboyant costumes, outrageous hijinks, and special surprises, this one time show is a must see.

Calling all Hed-heads– lift up your hands and sing-a-long with Hedwig! For those of you that don’t know all the words yet, the lyrics will be projected onscreen along with the movie’s sound and picture.

For fans of rock music, sing-a-longs, musicals, cult films and/or just plain fantabulous fun, this is a don’t miss event! Buy your tickets today before this exclusive show sells out!

Janis Ian
with special guest Gretchen Peters

A live concert exclusive.

Who are the great songwriters in America today? Not the most popular. Not the richest. Simply the greats.

Ask any student of the form, and Janis Ian will be counted among them. The writer of “Jesse,” a song recorded by so many others that few remember Ian wrote it; “Stars,” possibly the best song ever written about the life of a performer, recorded by artists as diverse as Mel Torme and Cher; and the seminal “At Seventeen”, a song that brought her five Grammy nominations (the most any solo female artist had ever garnered) in 1975, and which is now reaching its third generation of listeners.

Opening the show is the superb Nashville songwriter Gretchen Peters, who recently collaborated with folk stalwart Tom Russell on a great album of southwestern songs, “One to the Heart, One to the Head.”

Wilmette Theatre :: More Than Movies

By Venus Zarris

As is sadly the case for so many Chicagoland landmarks, the Wilmette Theatre was slated for a redevelopment project. It had hosted live entertainment as well as films for almost 100 years. Carole Dibo and Sam Samuelson spearheaded an effort to save the theater and as the current owners they are not only preserving but also enhancing this North Shore treasure, creating an alternative entertainment destination in the process.

I had the pleasure of enjoying an evening at the Wilmette Theater, taking in an intimate concert by the legendary blues/jazz artist Leon Redbone. The evening started off with Chicago’s very own David Kovac warming up the crowd. His distinctive brand of modern-day vaudevillian comedy/juggling/magic delighted the audience and set the perfect tone of timeless entertainment for the suspended flashback of Redbone’s remarkable music. Kovac was perfectly charming and Redbone was subtly dazzling. David Kovac - Comedy Magic

Accompanied by an outstanding piano player (Paul Lozzaro? sorry but there was no program for the show) and with only a guitar Redbone did, with bare bones production, what few contemporary artists achieve with semi-trucks full of support. He quite simply and completely connected with the audience. With silly, sweet, yet somehow suavely sophisticated grandpa humor and music from the early 20th century, Redbone suspended time to beguile a crowd that was on their feet for a standing ovation by the end of his set. The Official Leon Redbone Website

Along with great films, this is what the Wilmette Theatre has to offer. They present unusual programs of live entertainment, thereby creating an exceptional entertainment destination.

Their programming ranges from kids shows to adult productions that are well worth a look and well worth the trip.

Dibo and Samuelson’s Herculean efforts go beyond the preservation of an old movie house. Their collective vision has created a home for the unique, an alternative from the commonplace and a true treasure on the North Shore.

Check out their website for a complete listing of live events as well as film presentations.
