Shining, Sparkling, Dazzling Christmas Spectacular!

It is true; sometimes you just don’t know what you’re missing. A Holiday tradition is born!!!! I was swept away on a cloud of twinkling lights by this presentation of Christmas spirit that is every thing they claim and none of what I expected.

I am a Chicagoan, born and raised, the product of South Side skeptics. I believed that there was nothing from New York that was worth scratch. Wow, what a mistake I was making.

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, featuring the Rockettes, will be on my holiday wish list from now on!

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular has been a perennial favorite of East Coasters since 1933. The Rockettes performances date back to 1932. During the later years of the Great Depression, as recovery and rebuilding became the focus of many Americans, the entertainment industry played an enormous role by providing momentary distractions from the hard work at hand. At that time The Rockettes were a vaudeville act, 18 pretty girls dancing across the stage between acts of Emmett Kelly and Coco the Dancing Bear. For the Christmas season they added holiday-themed numbers and feature films. In 1979 the Christmas Spectacular became the all-live 90-minute show that still captivates audiences today.

Back in 1979 I was a High School student. I had been on stage in several different productions, some musical, some not. All I knew of the Radio City shows was what I saw at Christmas, pretty girls in stockings, high heels and short sparkly costumes. When the opportunity came to see this years 75th Anniversary show I was excited to give my daughter the opportunity that I never had. She didn’t want to go. I begged her. I ordered her, and I appealed to her peer group. There wasn’t a single one of my daughter’s friends who did not try to convince me to take them in her stead. Finally she saw the light and we had a wonderful time! After all of that fussing and fighting, she cannot wait to go again next year.

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is just that–Spectacular! There are new numbers and sets added each year as well as perennial favorites. The precision, charisma and costumes of the Rockettes are legendary for good reason and don’t forget those kicks! Eye high and perfectly executed! There are also singers, elves and a little snow tossed in to sparkle up the spectacular holiday festivities. A reverent and lovely presentation of the Nativity closes off the grand celebration, complete with LIVE animals.
