THIS WEEK ONLY - DO NOT MISS!

We’re not in Hoffman Estates anymore Toto …

Step out of reality and into the magically fantastical world of Cirque Du Soleil’s Alegria! After 15 years as a big top show, Alegria has now been masterfully retooled to fit arena venues. This is classic Cirque Du Soleil, offering all of the thrills, marvels and out-of-this world production values that Cirque has become known for the world over.

I appropriate a quote from the Wizard of Oz because when the show begins you are transported into an altered reality of dazzling and unfamiliar happenings, much like Dorothy’s first step into Oz. Cirque also creates subtle hints of Oz by rendering extraordinary costumed characters (brilliantly designed by Dominique Lemieux) that seem to start where the characters of Oz left off and then explode those visual imaginations to reach wild and wonderful new levels.

The music of Alegria (composed by René Dupéré and performed by extraordinary singers and musicians) is a haunting combination of European Carnival, gypsy, tribal and cinematic themes that linger with you long after the show. I overheard more than one person humming the score on their way out which is pretty remarkable considering nothing is sung in English. It is perhaps the best music from any Cirque offering!

Every act excites and amazes. The Power Track tumblers, early on the first act, bounce off of trampolines and fly through the air in one of the most unbelievably choreographed sequence of gymnastics ever staged. They are like prancing fairies rapidly defying gravity and logic.

Cirque searches the globe for the most unique and accomplished performers and Alegria is a stunning example of their dedication to excellence. From the chiseled body and physically powerful, flexible and elegant Hand Balancer, to the Fire Dancers, to the Russian Bars, to the Contortionists, to the Aerial High Bar artists; Alegria is a jaw-dropping extravaganza of singular delights. The Cyr Wheel artist defies gravity and physics with a display that might just have you looking for trick wires but there are none to be found.

The clowning is creatively charming. The set design is beautiful. The performances are amazing and the experience is unforgettable. Alegria is a Spanish word that translates to happiness, joy and jubilation, which are the very emotions that this triumph delivers.

Alegria is also a must-see production that is sure to sweep you away to the altered state of Cirque Du Soleil’s incomparably wondrous imagination. Their shows are beguilingly rare gems and this one is polished to perfection!
